My Gear
I'm often asked what camera gear I use, so here's a list of my most commonly used camera gear, plus some of the accessories that I've found over the years to help make photography easier.
Camera Equipment
Canon 5DSR
I've been using Canon for a number of years, and currently use a couple of 5DSR full-frame bodies. These are now discontinued, so the nearest equivalent is the R5 mirrorless body, available from Wex.
Canon EF 24-70mm f4L f/4L IS Lens
This is my most commonly used lens, and is permanently attached to one of my 5DSR bodies. I prefer this over the f2.8 version as I almost always shoot at f8 or f11, so almost never have any need for f2.8, plus it's lighter and has IS too. Sadly Canon have discontinued this lens, so the only option now is to find a good used example.
Canon EF 16-35mm f4L IS USM Lens
This is a recent upgrade from the 17-40mm lens, which I found wasn't particularly sharp compared to some of my other lenses. The 16-35mm lens is fantastic though. I went for the f4 version as I hardly ever need to shoot wide open, using f8 or f11 most of the time. It also has IS, which the f2.8 version doesn't, and is lighter too.
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II Lens
This is a great lens, and I use it for both landscape and action photography (e.g., motor racing and airshows). Although large and heavy, it is very sharp and combined with the 1.4x extender allows you to really get close up to distant objects.
Canon EF 11-24mm f4L USM Lens
I don't use this lens often, but it comes into its own when 16mm just isn't quite wide enough! It's expensive, large, heavy and you can't easily use filters with it but that's a price worth paying when it makes the difference between getting the photo or not.
Usually the 100-400mm lens is plenty, however occasionally I need a little bit more reach which is when I use my 1.4x extender. It turns the 100-400mm lens into a 140-560mm, although does mean you lose one stop of light.
Gitzo GT4543LS Carbon Fibre Tripod
I've used Gitzo tripods for many years now, and while they're not cheap, they are great quality. I chose this particular model as it gives a good height without using an extending centre column, which I find tend to be less stable. It's also really sturdy, but not overly heavy for the size, and I prefer the twist locks to secure the legs rather than the flip out levers found on other brands of tripods.
Gitzo GH4383LR Series 4 Centre Ball Head
I've used a few different tripod heads in my time, and this one is my current favourite. I tend to prefer geared-heads, but this ball head is very quick to use, solid as a rock and also has a quick-release lever which makes it very quick to change cameras.
These are a great invention, and mean I can quickly fit or remove the strap to any of my camera bodies with just one click. If I'm wandering around with my camera then I sometimes like to have the strap fitted, however when I'm using a tripod the strap just gets in the way and flaps around in the wind so I prefer it off - these clips mean I can do both!
Drone Equipment
DJI Mavic 3
This drone is fantastic - it's a little larger and heavier than its smaller relatives, but the extra quality and performance makes up for that.
DJI Mavic 3 Intelligent Flight Battery
One battery just isn't enough, so I have a second one to give extended flight times.
This little charger is really handy as it means I can charge a spare battery at the same time as I'm using the drone. It plugs into any USB-C power source, including 12V car charger, portable power bank and a normal wall charger.
I find it really useful to be able to charge my drone (and other equipment) while driving, so this 12V charger is really handy. One of the USB-C ports has an output of 69W which is enough to charge my drone battery.
This little handheld meter is useful for measuring wind speed to make sure it's safe to fly.
I like to protect my equipment as well as I can, so when weight/space isn't an issue I carry my drone in this case. It's really well made, and just the right size to carry the drone, controller, charger and spare battery.
